Green Day
I guess this is still true, after about five years. Even people who think Green Day is overplayed and worn out have to admit that this band is responsible for introducing punk rock/alternative music to the world and they deserve credit for that. Okay, maybe all their songs sound alike, but it's a good sound most of the time. Back in my teenage years, when I was more prone to obsession, I actually made a GD webpage, but be warned that it hasn't been updated in two years. If you're another GD fan like me, you might be interested to know that BJ of GD has a side band called Pinhead Gunpowder, which (surprise!) sounds a lot like GD.

Weezer

Unfortunately, Weezer has broken up by now, but I think they still deserve to be up here. If they had stayed together, I think they would have wound up making some amazing music, but what they have is still pretty good. I think Pinkerton may be the best thirty minutes of music that I own.

The Offspring
The Offspring is one of the few bands that I hope will preserve alternative music over the next decade. Their older stuff (i.e. Ignition and Smash) is the best, but their new stuff is great too. The Offspring is best appreciated when turned up to eardrum-shattering volumes.

Sublime is another band no longer in existence due to the untimely death of the lead singer Bradley Nowell. In another few years, they probably won't be on any more top five lists, which is why I'm keeping them here for now. Also, I've found that they are really great music to listen to while indulging in... certain activities.

The Cranberries

This spot is a close call, but the Cranberries get it due to the great voice of Dolores O'Riordan. Nothing can really compare to No Need to Argue, which is one of the best albums out there.

Blur -- See picture below. It seems like there's nothing inbetween people who like "Song 2" but think there's not much more to Blur, and people who own every single Blur album (there are quite a few). I fall into the latter category. I love the pseudo-Beatles British accent and Blur has some great songs. They fall short of the top five list because about half of most of their albums is garbage (except for The Great Escape, which is all good). But when they make a good song, they do a really good job on it.
Self -- You've probably never heard of Self. I have two of their albums, which are 50% garbage and 50% the best songs I've ever heard. The song "Paint By Numbers" from the Dead Man on Campus soundtrack is an almost perfect song.
Garbage -- If they keep up the way they're going, they're going to be one of the biggest bands of the next decade. Both their albums are great, although few of their singles really amazed me.
The Bloodhound Gang -- Another band that I suspect will grow more popular in the next decade, even though most college kids are already well aware of them. I recently saw them in concert and they were very cool. Lately, their music has fallen into the category of tasteless pop/rap, along the lines of Slim Shady (who will be gone in another week or two). They have a nice sound and very offensive lyrics.
Nirvana -- I had to take them off the top five list, because it's sort of pathetic to have so many disbanded groups on the list, but Nirvana will always be one of my favorites.
The Beatles -- Hey, everyone likes the Beatles, and so do I.
