I have now listened to Nimrod enough to form a reasonable opinion about it. So this is my very thorough review:
I won't say that Nimrod is objectively the worst of the Green Day albums, but I will say that I like it least. It has some nice tunes, but I think it's too full of hate. Not that the other Green Day albums were not hate-filled and angry (I mean, they have a song called "F*ck Off and Die"), but it wasn't such a prevalent theme throughout the album.
A lot of people say that Nimrod was the most mature of the albums. Maybe. At the very least, it has the most variety. It shows the full range of Green Day, which I think is a bad thing, because I don't like their full range. They have soft stuff, harmonicas, and unbridled skreiching. Last time I heard, Nimrod wasn't even doing as well as Insomniac, which was considered to be a bomb. At least Insomniac had a song go to number one ("Brainstew") whereas the best Nimrod did was "Good Riddance", which hovered at number two for a while. Don't get me started on "Good Riddance" (yet).
Of the eighteen songs on album, I would say eleven of them are pretty good. The best song on the album is probably "Hitchin' A Ride", the first single to be released. This song is very reminiscent of "Brainstew", but did not do nearly as well. The only song off the album that became a hit was "Good Riddance", which I will now bash. First of all, I don't understand why it is called "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)". Every song should have one and only one title. I don't like titles like "Come Out and Play (Keep 'Em Separated)" or even "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?" If a group wants to give a song a name that has nothing to do with the song, then they should just do it and quit adding stuff in to give clues as to what the song is. Secondly, "Good Riddance" is not a representative Green Day song so I resent them getting fame for it. No true Green Day fan would like that song, and anyone who really liked that song probably wouldn't like Green Day's other stuff. Green Day is not about soft music, even though they sometimes throw in a soft song for some reason. However, "Good Riddance" has made Green Day famous in a way that they were not before, so I have to be appreciative of it. Even if it is too soft and sappy.
The new single "King For A Day" will probably appeal to Green Day's old fans. This song is about a kid who cross-dresses and the music is like something out of a carnival. I think it is one of the better songs on the album. Back to what the group does best: loud, fast, disturbing.
I made a song-by-song review of Nimrod a while back. I may update it someday.
